The GHER is an event founded by the Ghanzi and Lobatse communities in the interest of raising funds for Lady Khama’s initiatives. The community came up with the unique idea of hosting an endurance relay from Ghanzi to the South East District Gaborone using the traditional cattle routes that were once used by our fore fathers. This 4-day long race shows Batswana working together for a good cause as well as raising awareness on endurance riding. The GHER is now on its 8th year and has raised over 8 million Pula for the Trust, these funds have been redistributed to local charities who support vulnerable woman and children nationwide.  The Lady Khama Charitable Trust (LKCT) was registered and launched in 2002 by the current President of Botswana, Lieutenant General Dr S.K.I Khama in honour of his late mother Lady Ruth Khama, with the objective of continuing the charitable works to which she devoted so much of her life.
Since its establishment, the Trust, which was initially funded by monies left by Lady Khama, has made substantial contributions to various charities in Botswana. To date, through charitable fundraising initiatives such as the GHER, and other various organizations, private companies and individual support, the Trust has disbursed over P13 million to over 40 organisations throughout the country to assist the disadvantaged women and children in our society. With the new LKCT Grant procedure we are able to target funds towards organisations which have a good track record in good governance and financial discipline as well as the human resource capacity to carry out its activities.
To honour the long standing sponsors of the GHER, horse owners and riders, we welcome and host an appreciation lunch for their continuous and unwavering support towards LKCT and her endeavours.
